La técnica fue descubierta 1742 por el fabricante de cuchillos de Sheffield (Yorkshire, Inglaterra) Thomas Boulsover, quien notó que la combinación de plata y cobre fundidos retenía la ductilidad de ambos metales y se comportaba como unidad al ser manipulada. Otros talleres en Gran Bretaña, Europa continental y América del Norte también produjeron utensilios para cocinar y comer de plaqué de Sheffield. Después de la introducción de la galvanoplastia en 1840, la producción de plaqué de Sheffield declinó, hasta desaparecer por completo hacia 1870. Admirados por su brillo gris, suave y resplandeciente, los artículos de plaqué de Sheffield no tardaron en ser valorados y coleccionados.
